Mentor Application

Hello!

Thank you for your interest in becoming an Access Mentor! Access is a free program for URM and women looking to attend business school in the fall. Members are provided discounted and free access to test prep, admissions coaching, career resources and mentors. That’s where you come in. Access is looking for highly motivated MBA students and young alumni from top business schools to mentor our members and fellows and support them through the admissions process (no problem if you want to influence them to apply to your school!).

The Mentorship Program is designed to provide Access members and Access Fellowship recipients with valuable and relevant advice to succeed in the MBA application process at top business schools. As a mentor, you will impart valuable knowledge, offer support, share experiences, and suggest ways the applicant can best prepare for business school. Mentors will be integrated into the application process to provide guidance along the way. Mentors are expected to engage with mentees, respond in a timely manner, and commit 2-4 hours monthly to the program.

Committing through the Finish line!

We expect all of our mentors to commit through the finish line. Mentees are looking to you for support and motivation.

Access' mission is to increase the representation of URM and women in MBA programs and business by providing Access members and Fellows with discounted and free resources to guide them through the business school application process. Mentors are committed individuals who dedicate their time to support and encourage Access members and Fellows throughout their MBA application journeys. Mentors are always available to provide a listening ear and an encouraging word to mentees as they embark on this next step. Through regular one-on-one interactions and learning team meetings, mentors guide Access members and Fellows through the admissions process and serve as a role model and success advocate.

As a mentor, you will be paired with a learning team and co-mentors. The co-mentor system is designed to provide Access members and Fellows with diverse perspectives.

For Access Fellowship recipients: Each Fellow is also paired with a professional MBA admissions coach that will help them with branding, strategy, and finalizing applications.

Mentor responsibilities:

  • Attend a mandatory mentor kick-off session at the start of the program
  • Attend mandatory introductory calls with each of your mentees and your learning team
  • Be available, respond to slack messages, and join zoom calls
  • Be willing and vulnerable to share more about your journey applying to business school
  • Serve as a sincere and positive mentor and follow through on commitments made to mentees
  • Commit to meeting with mentees and learning team on a regular basis (no less than 2 hours per month)
  • Support mentees with resume review, high-level essay review, mock interviews, business school advice, and more
  • Support mentees with general business school questions, crafting a school list, identifying recommenders, thinking about financing business school, and staying motivated in regards to testing
  • Cultivate and maintain a strong relationship with mentees and learning team
  • Maintain integrity by providing mentees with constructive feedback and guidance but not doing the work for them
  • Communicate with co-mentors, mentees, learning team, and Access staff
  • Collaborate with co-mentors to divide tasks
  • Share lessons learned, best practices, and challenges with co-mentors and other program mentors
  • Commit through the finish line and support mentees until they all hit submit (R1/R2)
  • Engage with mentees post-MBA application submissions to advise on scholarship opportunities, making a school decision, pre-MBA opportunities, and more
  • Maintain confidentiality with any shared information
  • Participate in formal and informal evaluations of the program

Our mentors grow from their experiences with Access members and Fellows, have the satisfaction of seeing their mentees succeed, and gain a valuable resume asset and a network of driven professionals.

Access could not exist without the support and dedication of our mentors, so thank you again for your interest in becoming a mentor!
